Sideboards

Choose a Sideboard for Practical, Stylish Storage

A sideboard is a low storage cabinet that usually combines cupboards, drawers or both with a useful top surface. Traditionally placed in dining rooms, modern sideboards also work in living rooms, wide hallways and open-plan spaces. This collection targets general sideboard and dining-room-storage intent; glass-fronted display furniture remains separate in our Display Cabinets collection.

Sideboard Buying Checklist

• Measure width, height and depth, including skirting boards and nearby sockets.
• Check door and drawer clearance before choosing the final position.
• List what you need to store and compare shelf heights or drawer sizes.
• Confirm whether internal shelves are fixed or adjustable.
• Review the material, finish, weight, assembly and wall-fixing guidance.
• Measure delivery routes for wide or heavy cabinets.
• Keep heat sources and damp areas outside the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Small, Wide or Extra-Large Sideboard?

A small sideboard can add concealed storage without overwhelming a compact dining area or hallway. Wide sideboards provide a long styling surface and more cupboard space, while extra-large designs suit open-plan rooms and households with extensive tableware or media equipment.

Choose proportions in relation to the wall and nearby furniture. A very low unit beneath large artwork may feel balanced, while a tall or bulky cabinet can crowd a narrow route. Mark the footprint with tape and include the depth of open doors and drawers.

What Can You Store in a Sideboard?

• Plates, bowls, serving dishes and glassware used in the dining room.
• Table linen, placemats, coasters and seasonal entertaining accessories.
• Board games, stationery and household items in an open-plan family space.
• Media accessories, cables or controllers when used as low living-room storage.
• Vases, trays and decorative pieces that rotate through the year.

Heavy items should be placed according to shelf limits and manufacturer guidance. Keep frequently used pieces at accessible heights and use dividers or baskets to stop deep cupboards becoming cluttered. Browse Kitchen & Tableware for pieces that can be stored or displayed nearby.

Wooden and Mixed-Material Sideboards

Wooden sideboards offer natural warmth and can coordinate with Dining Tables. Mango wood may show rich variation and pronounced grain; acacia can provide warm colour and character; carved fronts create texture; cane panels bring a lighter woven detail. Industrial sideboards often combine timber with dark metal.

Some products use solid wood, veneers, engineered materials, stone or metal components. Check the individual specification for exact composition. Natural variation is expected in many timbers, while decorative finishes need product-specific cleaning rather than one universal method.

Style a Sideboard Without Losing Function

Leave part of the top clear so the unit remains useful for serving or everyday drop-off. A lamp, artwork and one grouped arrangement can create balance without clutter. Repeat colours from dining chairs, flooring or the table to connect the sideboard to the room.

For visible collections and glassware, use a display cabinet. For bottles and dedicated drinks storage, compare bar cabinets. In a living room, a TV Unit may provide cable management that a sideboard does not. These distinctions keep each collection focused on a different use.

Coordinate Dining-Room Furniture

Place a sideboard where doors can open without colliding with pulled-out chairs. Pair it with Dining Chairs and a suitable table, or use it beside an extendable dining table to hold serving pieces and occasional accessories. The wider Dining Room collection can help you compare complementary furniture.

Safety, Assembly and Care

Tall, wide or heavily loaded furniture may require wall restraint. Follow the supplied anti-tip and assembly instructions, use suitable fixings for your wall type and seek professional advice when necessary. Do not assume every wall or fixing is the same.

Dust with a soft cloth, wipe spills promptly and use cleaning products approved for the finish. Protect tops from heat, moisture and sharp objects. Lift furniture when repositioning and use floor protection appropriate to the room.

Before ordering, compare internal layouts as carefully as exterior dimensions. A wide cabinet with one fixed shelf may hold different items from a smaller model with drawers and adjustable shelves. Think about plate diameter, serving-dish height, cable access and whether doors can open fully beside nearby furniture. This practical check helps the sideboard serve its intended purpose rather than becoming attractive but awkward storage.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sideboards

What is a sideboard used for?

A sideboard provides low, mostly concealed storage with a usable top surface. It is commonly used for tableware and linen in dining rooms, but can also organise living rooms, hallways and open-plan spaces.

What is the difference between a sideboard and a display cabinet?

A sideboard is generally lower and focuses on concealed cupboard or drawer storage. A display cabinet is often taller or more open, with glass doors or shelves designed to show objects. Some hybrid products combine both functions.

How deep should a sideboard be?

Depth varies, but many sideboards are around 35–50 cm. Choose a size that holds your intended items without narrowing the walking route. Include open door and drawer depth when measuring.

Can a sideboard be used as a TV unit?

Sometimes, if the dimensions, load limit, ventilation and cable access are suitable. A dedicated TV unit may handle equipment and wires better. Check the product specification before placing electronics on a sideboard.

Should a sideboard match the dining table?

Exact matching is unnecessary. Repeating a wood tone, colour or metal detail can coordinate the room, while a contrasting finish can create a focal point. Proportion and practical clearance matter more.

What size sideboard is best for a small room?

A compact two-door sideboard or shallow design can add storage without dominating the room. Measure the wall, walking space and door swing, and avoid covering sockets or heating controls.

Do sideboards need to be fixed to the wall?

Some models require or recommend anti-tip restraint, especially when tall, heavily loaded or used around children. Always follow the supplied instructions and choose fixings appropriate for the wall.

How should a wooden sideboard be cleaned?

Dust with a soft cloth and wipe spills quickly. Use only products recommended for the exact finish, protect the top from heat and moisture, and avoid abrasive cleaners that may scratch or dull the surface.
